Telekom webshop products in environmental friendly packaging

Budapest,

From August the products ordered through the Telekom webshop will be packaged in pouches degrading faster, with lower environmental impact.

The raw material of new packages is low density, environmental friendly polyethylene containing 1% additive (d2w), accelerating degradation -  without any ingredients detrimental to human health. Scientific experiments prove that polyethylene products made with such additives meet all requirements for using the packaging, as well as food safety and healthcare requirements. Consequent to this additive, following the useful product cycle the pouch degrades within 2-5 years – however, degradation may also take place within a few months in natural environment, under favourable natural conditions. Following the use of packaging materials made with d2w additive, it starts degrading after being delivered to a landfill. Obviously, the pouch degrading is not the only purpose, but it should also minimise the load of harmful materials on the environment. The pouch – degrading in an environmental friendly way – has plenty of other advantages, as it improves the aesthetics of our environment, generating more positive perception of users, significantly decreasing the volume of waste and saturation of landfills.

Environmental protection and eco-efficiency of the operation are important elements of the 2011-2015 sustainability strategy of the Magyar Telekom Group, including the objective of decreasing waste emission – not only communal, toner and paper waste, but also packaging waste. Of the annual 300,000 orders placed through the ever more popular webshop, only 15% of the products (mostly SIM packages or other corporate orders) do not require pouch packaging for delivery. All the rest of the products require packaging, therefore the quality and material of packaging used for delivery matters a lot. Due to the nature of its activity, Telekom is not among the significant environmental polluters, neither from the input (raw materials, energy usage) nor from the output (produced waste, emissions)  point of view. Moreover, through its services the company assists its customers to lower their own environmental impact – while emphasis is also put on raising awareness.

Background information about d2w: d2w is an additive material that is blended with the core polymers during manufacturing. It brakes up molecule chains and at the end of the pre-defined useful life plastic degradation starts. The process is accelerated by oxidation – light, heat and pressure. Biological degradation is made complete by micro organisms. Remnants are not toxic and do not contain heavy metals (water, CO2, bio mass).
