Starting today, HSPA + data services are available in the T-Mobile network, within Budapest and several settlements around Budapest

Budapest, September 28, 2010

T-Mobile – being the market leader operator in the field of mobile Internet, with its market share of almost 50 percent – in addition to LTE tested another new data transmission technology in several districts of Budapest and a few neighbouring settlements, offering the HSPA + data solution to customers.

HSPA + is a standardised data technology, using which the existing 3G/HSPA network can be enabled to perform the theoretical maximum download speeds of 21 Mbps. The system built by experts of T-Mobile and Ericsson offers services in certain parts of districts 2,7, 10, 11 and 14 of Budapest, as well as in Pilisvörösvár and Gödöllő, and the majority of Gyömrő and Kerepes, as well as their surroundings. HSPA+ can offer 10-13 Mbps download speeds and 2.5-3 Mbps upload speeds in practical usage, and achieving such speeds required the upgrade of the radio network software, as well as the transmission technology upgrade of the relevant base stations. The advantages of HSPA+ can be immediately enjoyed with the Mobile Broadband Stick VI and Huawei E1820 modem – available in the portfolio of T-Mobile – by subscribing for any of the current mobile Internet packages. Both modems are available at a favourable price, with mobile Internet subscription, by making a loyalty commitment for the subscriptions.

„The application of HSPA+ in a live network is primarily of experimental nature, the objective of network development carried out jointly with Ericsson was to map up the practical experiences while using the technology in practical life. During the tests we wish to define, if it is worthwhile to upgrade the HSPA network – being of good quality and capable of serving our customers even presently – with the HSPA+ solution, in further areas. HSPA+ equipment namely are only available in limited quantity, and LTE is also expected to be debuted in a few years, which we are also analysing since late 2009” – said István Maradi, chief technical officer of Magyar Telekom.

The joint test LTE network of T-Mobile and Ericsson – operating since December 2009 and available to participating experts – is currently capable of producing 100 Mbps download and 35 Mbps upload speeds.
