Magyar Telekom's responsible action against cancer

Budapest, October 1, 2010 15:30

This year, Magyar Telekom will join the Health Bridge Partner Chain initiative by organizing discount-price breast cancer screenings for thousands of its employees, thus demonstrating the responsibility it feels for their health. Magyar Telekom also feels responsible for children suffering from tumors, thus, it sponsors the memorial day organized for the protégés of Pécs-based Tölösi Péter Foundation at Bikal on October 02, where 220 sick or already cured children can play with the toys available at the park, as well as the slide and play castle provided by Telekom.

As a member of the Health Bridge Partner Chain, Magyar Telekom shall provide discount-price breast cancer screenings to its employees between October 04 and December 17 at three locations: Budapest, Nyíregyháza and Sopron. The initiative organized by the Company and its strategic partner, Dimenzió Health Care Fund is to increase awareness about the fact that breast cancer is avoidable, if you lead a healthy lifestyle and go for regular screening tests, since breast cancer diagnosed in time is curable in 90% of all cases.

At Bikal, Baranya County, an exciting whole-day program will await the children suffering from cancer. The purpose of the event organized by Tölösi Péter Foundation is to involve children and their parents in an experience of positive thinking. The life-asserting entertainment program aimed at helping children in fighting their disease serves to give kids strength to embark upon the journey to recovery. Magyar Telekom has been sponsoring Tölösi Péter Foundation, which helps the children treated at the Pécs Pediatric Clinic's Oncology Department and their families, for years.

Magyar Telekom strives to create a likable and livable workplace, which promotes health, and demonstrates that effort by several measures, like providing workplace healthcare services, annual complex preventive check-ups and other medical screening programs. Close to 4000 Telekom employees take these opportunities each year. The healthcare fund contribution provided as part of a set of fringe benefits unique on the Hungarian market can be used by employees to pay for sports activities, sports gear or recreation retreats. Three thousand Telekom families spend time in holiday homes of the Company located at different settlements in the country, and in addition sports clubs, fitness clubs, as well as bicycle storage places are also available for them. Each year, close to five hundred people donate blood in an organized manner at Telekom sites. The Company also protects non-smokers by keeping how-to-quit-smoking CDs available at its infirmaries. Mental hygiene of employees is served by psychological counseling.

As a recognition of the efforts made in its capacity as responsible employer, Magyar Telekom, after having collected the Family-friendly Workplace and Best Employer awards, won the American Chamber of Commerce's (AmCham) Healthy Workplace 2009 Award, too.
