Magyar Telekom Wins Green Frog Award Again
Budapest, October 28, 2009 15:00
Magyar Telekom ranked second with its Sustainability Report in the competition announced for the Central European Environmental Reporting Award ("Green Frog"). It is the fifth time the company has won this recognition. Companies from all countries of the region were invited to apply irrespective of their industry and the number of their employees, and the jury selected the one with the best environmental or sustainability report. The award was presented to the winners by Imre Szabó, Minister for Environment.
Participation was open to all companies from any country of the region that presented their environmental performance as part of their annual report or through a separate environmental or sustainability report. This year a total of 27 Hungarian, 4 Serbian and 3 Croatian reports were submitted and the quality of the reports resulted in the closest competition for this year's Green Frog Award.
According to the jury the favorable trend experienced in the previous years continued as firms attached ever more emphasis to preparing their reports.
Magyar Telekom's sustainability report was highlighted for the attention the company pays to its suppliers, for presenting a structure in which the analysis follows the perspective of sustainable development, as well as for including sustainability in its communication.
Magyar Telekom's report presents the company's sustainability initiatives along the lines of the company group's new (2008-2011)
sustainability strategy:
1. Responsible corporate governance and risk management
2. Customer relations
3. Enhance possibilities for social communication
4. Decrease burden on the environment
5. Human resource management
6. Sustain confidence and credibility
The original aim of the Green Frog Award established in 2001 was to prepare companies of the region for participation in the EU's environmental and sustainability tenders. Deloitte, the environmental consulting firm that created the award wished to contribute to a change in the attitude of companies in Hungary and in the region. The Green Frog Award has become a symbol of promoting environmental culture among companies in Hungary and in the region.
Magyar Telekom and its subsidiaries have been paying special attention since 1990 to managing social and environmental problems. Since 2002 Magyar Telekom has been coordinating its environmental protection efforts at group level and, since 2005, it has had its own sustainability strategy. We publish a sustainability report every year, which is certified by an independent third party according to the guidelines contained in the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Our company is the first and still the only company in Hungary to publish an A+ report complying with GRI's third generation guidelines.
Sustainability, the recognition of the three-fold connectedness of the environment-society-economy and its reinforcement through positive actions is a long-term strategic principle for Magyar Telekom Group. Accordingly the company endeavors to integrate the sustainability-related approach in the corporate governance process at all levels. This group-level assertion of the sustainability approach and its coordination is ensured by the Group's Sustainability Coordination Council. Magyar Telekom Group's top management and Management Committee are regularly informed on the accomplishment of the tasks set out in the sustainability strategy and the achievements in this regard.
