The Puskás Tivadar Secondary Technical School for Telecommunications sponsored by Magyar Telekom has won an Excellent Matriculation Exam Place award. Gergely Arató, State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Education, presented the diploma and plaque testifying the excellence award to László Horváth, director of the Telecommunications Secondary School this afternoon.

The award was presented at a ceremony held in Móricz Zsigmond Secondary Grammar School on the occasion of the distribution of prizes in the 2008/2009 National Secondary School Study Contest. The Excellent Matriculation Exam Place award was given to 14 institutions in the country, but the Puskás Tivadar Telecommunications Secondary School was the only one in Budapest to earn the distinguishing title.

The school is sponsored by the Magyar Telekom Telecommuncation Education Foundation. Built in 1906, in 1951 the school took the name of Tivadar Puskás, inventor of the telephone exchange. Today, it is one of the best equipped in the country and in a 2008 competence test its students performed well above the country average. By sponsoring the institution Magyar Telekom contributes to the high-standard education of the telecommunication and information technology professionals of the future.

Since 2005 Puskás Tivadar Secondary Technical School for Telecommunications has been one of the biggest advanced-level matriculation exam centers of Budapest. Hundreds of students from the secondary grammar and vocational schools of the neighborhood, who choose to sit for an advanced-level matriculation examination, come here for their written exams in English and German language, information technology, physics and biology, and to take verbal tests before 3-member exam boards. Since neither legal nor technical compliance objections have been raised against the examinations organized by the school in the past three years, and the school has duly met all the deadlines, it was given the opportunity to apply for the Excellent Matriculation Exam Place award. To win the title the school and its sponsor had to agree that on the request of the Education Office it will organize advanced-level matriculation examinations in at least two subjects twice a year, in autumn and spring, for 10 years on the same high standard.
The medals of the National Study Competitions of Secondary Schools were also presented at the ceremony. János Szedelényi, 11th year student of the Puskás Technical School finished first in the mathematics competition.
