Magyar Telekom Digital Bridge Fest in the Nyírség region

Budapest, December 9, 2009 15:30

Magyar Telekom is organizing its Digital Bridge Fest to be held on December 12, 2009, in four small settlements of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County. Magyar Telekom's volunteers will teach the residents of the settlements how to use the Internet, while a talent contest will be held with Péter Novák and Kultúrpart.

This will be the second Digital Bridge Fest event this year, following the first, which took place in six small settlements of Baranya County in May. Thanks to the big success of that event, on December 12, Nyírgelse, Bököny, Geszteréd and Érpatak will host the Digital Bridge Fest this time. At all locations, customized Internet training will take place, along with some contests, and under the direction of Péter Novák, a talent contest will also be held for children and adults alike.

One of the major objectives set by Magyar Telekom's sustainability strategy is to strengthen the information society, to eliminate the digital divide and to promote Internet use. In the framework of the Digital Bridge initiative, launched in 2004, a program was put in place for small settlements, with the purpose of helping to eliminate the digital divide by showing local residents what the Internet is, what it can be used for, how it can connect people living far apart, and to what extent it can enable solutions to everyday problems.

The events of the Digital Bridge in Small Settlements Program typically take place in settlements of less than 3000 inhabitants, where Magyar Telekom's volunteers provide efficient, customized training, accompanied by exciting contests. Participants receive expert answers to their questions, and can search for the answers on the Internet together.

"The program has already proven over the past five years that people like to help each other, if help is really needed. When we talk to someone in person, and surf the Internet to search for machinery parts for a combine, strawberry plants, employment opportunities, or to check the price of grains or the previous week's precipitation level, we realize what different lives we live, and how important information access can be. We help to simplify everyday chores, and receive a lot of smiles in return. Now, we would like to make this even more interesting with the help of Péter Novák and the talent contest,- said the head of Magyar Telekom's Sustainability Department, Katalin Szomolányi.

With this event, the Digital Bridge in Small Settlements program reaches the 132nd location. Over the past five years, more than 250 volunteers of Magyar Telekom took part in popularizing the Internet. The 100th, jubilee event took place in January, when the Digital Bridge visited the same settlement which had hosted the first event, Bakonszeg, in Hajdú-Bihar County.
