More attractive ADSL - broadband innovations from Magyar Telekom

Budapest, December 18, 2006 12:00

Magyar Telekom will substantially increase the bandwidth of the ADSL Internet accesses and will also introduce wholesale ADSL without telephone access in the first quarter of 2007.

Another bandwidth expansion free of charge

Magyar Telekom has been making continuous efforts to constantly improve the quality of its services: as part of these efforts in 2005 and 2006 it increased the bandwidth of its ADSL service free of charge on several occasions.

As a next step of these developments, in the first quarter of 2007 Magyar Telekom will once again raise the bandwidth of the ADSL service free of charge. The bandwidth increasedepending on the package and the technical possibilitieswill enable two, three or even four times faster Internet usage for all present and new customers. For packages which currently offer 512 kbit/s, the bandwidth may increase to 1 Mbps, where the current maximum download speed is 1 Mbps, it may go up to 4 Mbps, and the current 2 Mbps or 3 Mbps bandwidths may soar to 8 Mbps maximum download speed. The benefits of the increased bandwidth will be felt for example when using the ever more popular multimedia applications (video, music etc.).

Magyar Telekom will start increasing the bandwidth for its ADSL customers by the middle of January, and the transition jobs are expected to take a couple of months. Magyar Telekom technicians are working on the ADSL switch-over 24 hours a day and consequently there may be stoppages of a few minutes on the access points.

Wholesale ADSL without telephone service

The growth of the Hungarian Internet market has triggered demand for broadband Internet usage without telephone service. Magyar Telekom has recognized this demand and will introduce ADSL without telephone service in the future, which will be available to users through the Internet service providers. The implementation of ADSL without monthly subscription telephone service requires extensive development on the part of Magyar Telekom; the jobs involved are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2007. This service will give ADSL access also to customers who do not have a wireline telephone subscription.
