"The European Information Society for Development and Employment: Perspectives for Central and Southeastern Europe" - this is the title of a scientific conference, organised by ENCOMPASS, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Informatics and Communications, as well as T-Com.

The thematic blocks of the two-day international trade conference in English set the target, on the basis of the European Commission’s i2010 initiative, to investigate into the technical, economic, legal, regulatory, institutional and ethical aspects of closing the gap in digitisation and innovation. The role of the use of broadband Internet and the reasons for the low penetration rates will be discussed in a separate block.

The conference will be opened by Professor Dr. Norbert Kroó, Vice President (Natural Sciences) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Dr. György Csepeli, Political Secretary of State of the Ministry of Informatics and Communications.

The recognised international scientists and specialists attending the conference will analyse current and future trends in the consumption of media and telecommunications services; they will review the situation of research on infocommunications and of the industry in the region. We can learn about the progress of information protection in the European information society and about the scope of the i2010 programme of the EU.

The participants will discuss the issue of the digital divide in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the possible solutions for overcoming it. We will deal in detail with the application of infocommunications technology in the fields of education, government and public administration, as well as in healthcare.

We can attend lectures on how innovations and investments could be boosted in the field of research on infocommunications and what roles are to be played by the universities and by the state in this key area. The lecturers will also cover the issue of how R&D and innovation could be managed at the enterprise level.

An exciting discussion can be expected regarding broadband technology and its many perspectives. The participants will study the trends and potentials in broadband technology in our region and will provide an overview on the regulatory and competition law aspects of the broadband development.

The two-day event will be closed by Elek Straub, Chairman and CEO of Magyar Telekom.
