Magyar Telekom: 3 million HUF support to the National Oncology Institute

Budapest, July 21, 2005 10:00

Assistant professor Dr. Emil Farkas, president of the Tumor Surgery Foundation, today received a 3 million HUF donation from Dr. Bálint Nagy, communication director of Magyar Telekom. The Foundation intends to spend the donation on the purchase of medical equipment to improve the security of abdominal surgery.

The Tumor Surgery Foundation was established in 1996 at the General and Chest Surgery Department of the National Oncology Institute. Its aim is to continuously improve and keep at European level the personnel and material conditions of tumor surgery. The Institute performs approximately 2000 general and chest surgery operations a year, half of which are major abdominal surgery. An appropriate instrument background is the first and foremost condition of the success of safe, fast and efficient surgical intervention. The instruments and equipment of the National Oncology Institute are rather obsolete, so this donation will greatly contribute to improving the quality of work of the surgeons.

Magyar Telekom also donated larger sums to the Tumor Surgery Foundation earlier. In 2000, the company helped the work of the Foundation with 2.5 million HUF, and in 2004, with 2 million HUF. The Foundation spent the money on the purchase of a new hand-held gamma scan, which has helped cure 600-700 people a year.

Magyar Telekom considers it a priority objective to contribute, through its donations, to the support of the health and financial institutions in greatest need of such assistance. In 2004, the company won a Superbrands award in the "social contribution" category and on two occasions it has earned the Corporate Donor of the Year award of the Nonprofit Information and Education Center.
