Help Flood Victims by Calling the Flood Aid Line! *
Budapest, August 23, 2002
The collaboration and cooperation of Hungary's five telecommunications service providers enable us to support flood victims with a gross amount of HUF 100 per call when dialing the number 1749 from any of the 9 million fixed or mobile lines within the country. As was the case last year, the solidarity of Matáv, Vivendi, Pannon GSM, Vodafone and Westel is expected to be received positively. It is worth remembering that nearly HUF 100 million was donated through the aid line last year.
In the past weeks, the water level along several stretches of the
Danube was higher than at any time before; the unprecedented floods
caused serious damages in Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria and
Hungary alike. In spite of all efforts, many houses were ruined or
damaged along the river which put a severe strain on the dikes; the
Danube flood has washed away the life work of many people.
Our country has stood this test of solidarity excellently; tens of
thousands worked on saving whatever could still to be saved by
strengthening the protecting dams. The flood waters have now receded,
but there is still a great need for aid. Please help to rebuild what
was damaged. From August 23, 2002 you can support flood victims by
gross HUF 100 per call when you dial the flood aid number 1749 from a
Matáv, Vivendi, Pannon GSM, Vodafone or Westel line.
Naturally, the companies will continuously inform the public on the
campaign announced in the media, on the amount donated and how it is
used.
