Matáv and T-Mobile launch WLAN roaming

Budapest, October 4, 2004

As a uniquely new feature, Matáv and T-Mobile enabled their customers to use the fast wireless Internet access (WLAN service) within each other’s networks with no limitation.

Subscribers bearing interest for the new service can already use the WLAN access points on an experimental basis. Customers of Matáv can access the web at the 28 HotSpots of T-Mobile, while T-Mobile subscribers can log on the net at Matáv's 53 WLAN access points (e.g. Ferihegy airport, Vörösmarty square, downtown hotels, cafes, etc.). Customers can use the new service from September 20, 2004 as a pilot. Following the pilot operation - both regarding billing and settlement - the two operators are expected to launch commercial operation from the spring of 2005.

After the pilot phase other operators are also welcome to join the WLAN roaming. Upon establishing technical conditions and signing agreements with partner providers customers will be enabled to use access authority bought with one operator for Using Internet in the other operator’s network, as well. Customers holding the appropriately enabled laptop or palmtop - within the WLAN coverage area - can access emails, corporate Intranet pages or the Internet with high data rates even without fixed line connections. Matáv and T-Mobile will offer the WLAN service to customers soon at additional locations featuring high traffic (shopping malls, conference centers, etc.).
