Matáv's chess team in Switzerland

Budapest, June 27, 2003

Matáv's chess team participated in the Union Scipt international chess tournament organised between June 15 and 22, 2003 in Arosa, Switzerland. Teams of telecommunications and post companies took part in the competition. The employees of Matáv were placed sixth among all the teams, while if only the telecommunications teams are considered, they finished second. The winner of the tournament was Dutch KPN Telecom, followed by four professional postal teams: Denmark Post, Poland Post, Postfolket Sweden and TNT.

The Union Scipt chess competition has been organised every fourth year since 1987. In 1999 the event was held in Balatonkenese, while in 2007 the tournament will be hosted by the Netherlands. According to the rules 40 moves have to be made in 2 hours, and if the players succeed in doing so one more hour is allocated to both of them, so a game may last 6 hours at the most.

In previous years Matáv's team entered these competitions through a foundation established jointly with the Hungarian Post Company; this was the first time Matáv participated with a separate team. The five members of the team were: Mr. Pál Kustra, Mr. József Supoló, Mr. Károly Sugár, Mr. Attila Hídvégi and Mr. Lajos Liskán.

This year the chess team of Matáv Employees Sports Club took fourth place from 14 competitors in Class B of the Budapest Championship. Two years ago they were still playing in Class C, but they were the winners already in the first year, qualifying for the higher category.
